地方出張に行く道すがら、畑の様子を見ていくのがおもしろい。雨季の間は田んぼが多いが、水が多すぎて稲作に向かない土地にはジュートが植わっていたり、少し高台では野菜が作られていたり。バゲルハット周辺ではエビの養殖が盛んで、畑ならぬ養殖池がずっと広がっている。
In Bangladesh, something is always growing in the field. During monsoon, rice cultivation is the most popular. You can also find vegetable in elevated land and jute in low, wet land. In the south, like Bagerhat, there are no field, but only ponds after ponds to shrimp culture.
さて、次の写真はディナジプールに行く途中で撮ったもの。何だかわかります？

実はこれサトウキビ。甘みをだすために出来るだけ育ってから収穫するので、倒れないよう何本かまとめてしばってあるのだそう。最初は何かのアートかと思ったけれど、気をつけて見たら結構あちこちでやってました。
This is sugar cane. Farmer wants to let them grow as it will get sweeter. So sugar canes are tied together not to fall on the ground. Later I found it can be find many places, so understood that this is not art or something.
