今月初め、ディナジプールで実施している先住民族の子どもたちへの教育支援の事業地へ出張していた。プロジェクトのマネージャーが一身上の都合により退職することになり、後任候補との面接に出席するためである。
At the beginning of September, I’ve been to Dinajpur for a couple of days. I needed to attend interview for reqruitment of satff of Santal Children Development project.
ダッカからディナジプールまでは車で約8時間。朝ダッカを出発したら、目的地には夕方に到着、渋滞に巻き込まれたら到着は夜になるような距離である。でも、ダッカを離れるにつれて次第にのどかになっていく風景にはいつも和まされる。
Dinajpur is a 8-hour drive from Dhaka.If there is traffic jam, it may take more than that. Though it is a long drive, you will never be board seeing beautiful landscape from the window.
今回ディナジプール周辺で何人か女性が自転車に乗る姿を見かけた。日本だったらごく普通のことだが、バングラデシュでは農村で女性が自転車に乗るというのはまだ珍しく、ダッカでもほとんどいない。一人で出歩くことすら制限されることだってある社会なのだから。
Near Dinajipur, I saw more than a couple of women riding bicycles. If it is Japan, it isn’t unusual, but it is in Bangladesh where women sometime are not allowed to go out alone.
移動手段を手に入れるというのは、自分の意思で行動できるということ。颯爽と自転車に乗る若い女性たちの姿が輝いて見えたのは、バングラデシュの社会で「自立」を体現しているからなのだろう。
Having your own transportation ensures you to go anywhere you want at anytime. Why I was attracted to those young women was that they are really independent.
